A good example of semi-continuous pet food production can be seen in a project delivered for Pets Choice. The manufacturer was looking to replace an existing process based on batch cooking followed by separate cooling and needed a solution capable of delivering sterilised products with an extended shelf life.
Rather than investing in multiple pressure kettles and retorts, an in-line semi-continuous processing system using Jet Process pre- technology was developed. The integrated system combined mixing,pre-slurrying of starches and gums, heating, sterilisation and cooling within a compact production footprint.
The result was a high-throughput wet pet food production line capable of processing up to 18,000 kg per hour while reducing energy consumption, cleaning times, water usage and chemical consumption. The system also improved product yield, reduced waste and eliminated burn-on issues commonly associated with traditional cooking methods.
This example highlights how semi-continuous processing can provide significant operational efficiencies when producing large volumes of standardised wet pet food products.
Product Quality and Ingredient Integrity in Wet Pet Food Production
The choice of processing method can have a direct impact on product quality.
Batch processing allows manufacturers to carefully control cooking times, temperatures, ingredient addition and processing conditions for each production run. This level of control can help preserve ingredient integrity, maintain texture and support the production of premium products.
For products containing high levels of meat, visible vegetables, rice and pulses or delicate inclusions, maintaining these characteristics throughout processing can be particularly important.
Kettle Systems, Jet Cook technology and Sous Vide Cook Tanks are frequently used where gentle thermal processing is required, helping manufacturers achieve consistency while maintaining the quality attributes consumers increasingly expect from premium pet food products.
Semi-continuous systems also deliver highly consistent products but are typically optimised for production efficiency and repeatability across larger volumes.
Industry Insight
One of the challenges frequently encountered when scaling semi-continuous pet food production is maintaining ingredient integrity while increasing output. Products containing visible inclusions, high meat content or specialised formulations often require careful management of cooking and handling processes to achieve consistent results at scale.
